Partial Transport in a Natural Gravel-bed Channel
نویسندگان
چکیده
[1] Partial transport is documented in the gravel bed channel of Carnation Creek using magnetically tagged stones. For four flood peaks the active proportion of surface grains was used to map streambed areas into distinct units of three different levels of grain entrainment. In partially mobile regions of the bed, the active proportion of surface grains declines with grain size. As flow increases, areas of partial transport grow at the expense of inactive areas and fully active areas replace areas with partial mobility. Approximately 25–50% of the bed remained in a state of partial mobility during a flood with a 2-year return period, indicating that inactive regions of the bed surface typically persist from year to year. During a flood with a 7-year return period, surface grain entrainment was nearly complete, indicating that full mobilization of surface grains is not a frequent event.

Effects of Sediment Transport on Survival of Salmonid Embryos in a Natural Stream: A Simulation Approach
A model is presented that simulates the effects of streamflow and sediment transport on survival of salmonid embryos incubating in spawning gravels in a natural channel. Components of the model include a 6-yr streamflow record, an empirical bed load-transport function, a relation between transport and infiltration of sandy bedload into a gravel bed, effects of fine-sediment infiltration on grav...
متن کاملA general power equation for predicting bed load transport rates in gravel bed rivers
[1] A variety of formulae has been developed to predict bed load transport in gravel bed rivers, ranging from simple regressions to complex multiparameter formulations. The ability to test these formulae across numerous field sites has, until recently, been hampered by a paucity of bed load transport data for gravel bed rivers. We use 2104 bed load transport observations in 24 gravel bed rivers...
متن کاملDynamic transport capacity in gravel-bed river systems
Sediment transport capacity mediates the transfer and storage of bed material between alluvial reservoirs in a drainage system. At intermediate time scales (100-102 yr) corresponding to the evolution of sediment pulses, conditions governing bed-material transport capacity under the hydrologic regime respond to variations in storage and sediment flux as pulses extend, overlap, and attenuate thro...
متن کاملSediment routing through channel confluences: Particle tracing in a gravel-bed river headwaters
Sediment routing in gravel-bed rivers refers to the intermittent transport and storage of bedload particles, where short-duration steps are separated by periods of inactivity. Channel morphology governs sediment routing, but morphologic effects on routing in headwater systems are not well understood compared to lowland systems. RFID tracers are a valuable tool that can be employed to characteri...
متن کاملPredicting the Hydraulic and Morphological Conse- quences of River Rehabilitation
Decisions about flood protection and river rehabilitation require prediction of the consequences of each possible management alternative. To provide such predictions, an integrative model is required that represents the cause-effect relations between revitalisation measures and morphologic, hydraulic and ecological consequences. This paper describes the hydraulics submodel of such an integrativ...
